Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president, has acknowledged that his military is not able to ward off Russia’s invasion and is asking citizens to participate in the war. In 2022, world leaders use social media to speak to their citizens. “We will give weapons to anyone who wants to defend the country. Be ready to support Ukraine in the squares of our cities,” Zelenskyy tweeted, indicating that he is preparing for an all-out on-the-ground war.
Before Russia launched their attack, Ukraine’s president stated, “If they [Russia] attack, if they try to take our county – our freedom, our lives, the lives of our children – we will be defending ourselves… As you attack, it will be our faces you see, not our backs.” Zelenskyy also recently reported that his calls to Russia have gone unanswered. Negotiations are no longer an option.
According to estimates, private gun ownership in Ukraine averages 6.6 firearms per 100 people. Russians have already breached the nation’s capital, seized Chernobyl, and are rapidly expanding into every area of Ukraine. Citizens fighting trained armed forces will lead to a massacre. Hundreds of soldiers have died in the initial attack and the death toll will only rise. Ukraine requested that its citizens take up arms against the Russians on the first day of the invasion, indicating Ukraine lost the war before it began.
