1035-1042

Hardicanute, King of England and Denmark, was the son of Cnut, and succeeded his father on the Danish throne in 1039; and at the same time laid claim to that of England, which had devolved to his half-brother, Harold. A compromise was effected, by which he governed the southern part of the kingdom during Harold’s life, and succeeded to the whole on his death. His conduct was violent and tyrannical; he revived the odious tax called Danegelt; and his subjects rejoiced at his early death, which happened in 1041.
